Morning Mist

The Biography of Pat Scarano

My earliest childhood memories contain evidence of my deep love of art and its creative processes. It is no surprise that drawing, teaching and creating art was the only career path that I ever considered.

A native of Easton Pennsylvania, I graduated from Kutztown University with a BS degree in Art Education. In 1973 I relocated to Wilmington Delaware, where I began a 34 year career teaching art in the public schools.

Teaching and raising three wonderful children consumed most of my time during the 80's and 90's but now with more time, I am excited to return to my core passion...Painting.

Upon retiring, I realized that I still loved the teaching process, and have been teaching part time ever since while enjoying more time to create as a freelance artist.

In 2003 I joined a group of artists who went to Ireland for a two week painting trip. The beautiful landscapes reignited my passion to pursue producing my own work.

I fell in love with Watercolors in college and have continued to work in this medium throughout my adult life.

A recent opportunity to participate in a painting trip to the Gaillac region of southern France, dramatically altered my painting style. The teacher on this trip specialized in oils. This was my opportunity to try something I’d been thinking about for a while.

As I watched, I realized this process could not be more different than using watercolors. I felt like a beginner again and immersed myself in learning this "polar opposite process."

I like stretching myself professionally, personally and creatively in this totally different process. As a creature of habit, this new medium forces me to break out of my regimented, comfortable way of painting to explore new possibilities.

Painting Plein Air in both mediums is also something I totally enjoy.
